In Our Own Words

Tiffany Chase

"My name is Tiffany Chase and I am an attendant for my aunt, and I'm in school.  When my aunt went into the hospital, my salary completely stopped.  I enjoy my job, but this is not the first time I have been in this situation, and I am sure it will not be the last.  If there was a system where I could be of use to another consumer while my main consumer was away, it would solve my financial dilemma and I could continue on with my education. This is why I am asking you to support the Consumer Workforce Council."

Consumer/Attendant Workforce Steering Committee Releases Frequently Asked Questions

Seniors, people with disabilities, and workers are building a strong vision of a home care system that works for every Pennsylvanian. Want to learn how a new home care system, led by people with disabilities, seniors, and workers, will better serve our families and communities? Have questions about how a direct care worker registry will expand home care to thousands more Pennsylvanians, while preserving, promoting, and protecting consumers' complete control over the direct care workers they employ? Click here now for answers to your frequently asked questions, or read below to learn more.

The historic steering committee on home care, convened under the leadership of Secretary of Labor and Industry Sandi Vito, has released a set of frequently asked questions on their initiative -- and solidifying their unified stance: that home care consumer-employers and the workers they employ are the stakeholders ready to improve home care in the state.

"The direct care workers of Pennsylvania are fighting alongside seniors and people with disabilities," says Carol Jones, a direct care attendant working for over 11 years. "We need to improve the quality of our direct care jobs, because consumers have the right to be independent, and we want to do everything we can to make that happen."

The frequently asked questions on the home care initiative, drafted by Tom Earle, CEO of Liberty Resources and the Chair of the Consumer/Attendant Workforce Steering Committee, can be found by clicking here.

"This fact sheet covers some frequently asked questions that people with disabilities, seniors, and workers have asked about our initiative to promote consumer-directed services and create a reliable and retainable workforce," says Tom. "Unfortunately, significant misinformation has been distributed by those who may not have a vested interest in our communities speaking for ourselves. We hope that this document, sent by me on behalf of the Consumer/Attendant Workforce Steering Committee, will help to get out the truth and clear up any misconceptions."
